Millicent E Hodge: Hartlage Wine Sweetshrub

Hartlage Wine Sweetshrub (Calycanthus X raulstonii ‘Hartlage Wine‘)

Hartlage Wine Sweetshrub, Calycanthus raulstonii ‘Hartlage Wine’, is a hybrid between the Asian sweetshrub (Sinocalycanthus chinensis) and the North American native Carolina allspice (Calycanthus floridus). This flamboyant cultivar is known for its large flowers and hardy nature. In the early spring this beauty attracts a wide variety of bees and moths. In the landscape this is a large shrub which will reach eight to twelve feet in height with a similar spread. It is hardy from USDA zones 5 to 9 and is known as a showstopper in lightly shaded areas on almost any property.

Millicent E Hodge

“Millie” loved God, her church, her many friends, was totally devoted to her 4 children and 7 grandchildren, however, education was her passion. She was a school librarian in the Charlotte Meckenburg School System and then later as a Media Specialist in the Monroe, NC School System. After retirement, she continued to teach others by volunteering as a Docent at the Mecklenburg Rosedale Historical Society. She remained very active with Rosedale until her declining health. She loved to tell the story of how at the age of 17, she was transported by train to New York City to be interviewed by Eleanor Roosevelt for the Youth Council of America. This had a major impact on her desire to become an educator. She was an avid reader, loved researching genealogy and writing poetry. This is an excerpt from her poem titled: “ My Prayer”

Let me go back to the tall trees of the hills,
Let me see the sun set in the West.
Let me walk among the silence, where nature is ever at her best
